Rutile: Oh, Sir Sage! Please take a look at this!

 

Akira: What a cute flower... Is this a rare kind?

 

Rutile: It becomes fuzzy when it blooms, and glows once night falls. My mother told me that they look just like shooting stars when you blow on them.

I’ve been to this place when I was younger, but the flowers weren’t in full bloom yet. I remember bothering my parents about it and selfishly demanding that I wanted to see them anyway.

It should be the right season for them to bloom...

 

Akira: So it’s a flower full of memories. How about we wait for the sun to set and search for some fuzzy ones?

 

Rutile: Would that be alright? They should be easier to find at night since they’re glowing.

 

Akira: I’m free for today, so I don’t mind. Why don’t we take some seeds home and plant them around the courtyard back in the manor?

 

Rutile: I don’t think that would work out, unfortunately. It seems that this type of flower only grows around this lake. 

What’s important is that Sir Sage gets to see it with his own eyes. Is there a similar type of flower in your world?

 

Akira: Yes! I really liked blowing on them when I was a child.

 

Rutile: I still love doing it! When you kick at them, the fuzz comes flying everywhere all at once. It’ll surely be a wonderful sight...

Akira: This really is a beautiful lake. I never get tired of looking at it.

 

Rutile: Isn’t it? When the time comes and I fall in love with someone, I’d like to bring them here as well.

Maybe it’s because my mother told me many stories about how she and my father met here. It really just seems like the perfect date spot!

 

Akira: It’s really amazing how this world has such a wonderful place to invite someone on a date to! I think it would be perfect.

 

Rutile: What kind of places do couples go to for dates back in you world, Sir Sage?

 

 

Option 1: Amusement park

 

Akira: Maybe the amusement park?

 

Rutile: Amusement park? What’s an amusement park?

 

Akira: It’s a bit difficult to explain, now that I’ve thought about it... It’s like, a place where you can ride a bunch of vehicles or watch shows being performed...?

 

Rutile: Vehicles... so like, a carriage, or a ship? Or maybe a broom?

 

Akira: A broom is probably the closest thing! You get on it and climb up high, then fall really quickly. It’s scary but also exciting.

 

Rutile: I see humans also enjoy the feeling of flying. Then, you shouldn’t have been afraid when you rode a broom for the first time!

That makes me feel a little bit closer to the lovers of Sir Sage’s world, who rode brooms and went round and round in the sky together!

 

 

Option 2: The Planetarium

 

Akira: Maybe the planetarium?

 

Rutile: Planetarium? Planetarium? What is that?

 

Akira: It’s a bit difficult to explain, now that I’ve thought about it... It’s like, a place where you can see projections of the stars...?

 

Rutile: What’s a projection?

 

Akira: Ah, right... In terms of magic, I guess it would be like an illusion. Since the illusion is made by a machine, you can see the stars even during the day.

 

Rutile: So it’s a machine that creates the night sky even when the sun is still out? I see the lovers back in your world are so fond of the stars that they even want to see them during the day.

I like to gaze up at the sky too, so I think I can understand their feelings a little more!

Rutile: Cinema? What’s a cinema?

 

Akira: It’s a bit difficult to explain, now that I’ve thought about it... It’s like, a big room where many people sit and watch a video together...?

Akira: Ah, right... in terms of magic, I guess it’s like an illusion. You could say that a video is like the illusion of a story being played out.

 

Rutile: Turning a story into an illusion sounds amazing! I’ve never thought about that before.

I could make a romantic picture book with my partner as the protagonist, then bring it to life as an illusion. I think they’d be very pleased with something like that...!

Rutile: The poem “Lake of Stars” might be the his most famous work, but the writer also wrote a romance novel based on Tycho Lake.*

 

Akira: I see! Have you read it, Rutile?

 

Rutile: I have! It’s about a love triangle in which the best friend and the lead fall for the same love interest!

Sir Sage, what would you do if we fell in love with the same person?

 

Akira: Eh?! The same person as Rutile? Uh... um....

 

 

Option 1: I’ll confess

 

Akira: I think I’ll confess to that person. I might be worried about how you feel now, but if I really do confess to someone, my feelings might get ahead of me.

 

Rutile: Oh, I’m glad! Because I’d do the same thing!

But... I also like Sir Sage a lot, so if you end up with them, I might get a little lonely.

Akira: I agree... Rutile, do you enjoy talking about love?

 

Rutile: I like talking about anything! You get to know someone better the more you talk about various things, so it’s a lot of fun.

I want to get to know Sir Sage better, and I want you to learn more about me as well.

Mitile: Ah...

 

Akira: Is something wrong?

 

Mitile: This lake... Nii-sama drew a picture of it a long time ago! It’s definitely this one.

The picture he drew is hung up back in our house. The sky was on the ground between the mountains, so I always thought it was just an interesting fantasy of his.

It wasn’t the sky - it was this lake all along.

 

Akira: Rutile’s art is pretty... unique, after all, so it might’ve been a bit confusing.

 

Mitile: No, it looks just like this. Nii-sama is actually really good at realistic paintings. 

It’s just that he normally likes to draw what he feels, rather than what he sees.

 

Akira: Is that so... putting it like that, it gives a really powerful vibe.

 

Mitile: When he draws something as he feels, I don’t really understand it sometimes.

Painting a cat when you see a cat makes more sense to me...

 

Akira: Ah, I get what you mean...

 

Mitile: Right?

Mithra: I really do want to take a nap, but I can’t sleep.

 

Akira: Somehow, this seems to be a conversation on totally different wavelengths... *

 

Rutile: This is always how it goes... But Mister Mithra is a laid back guy who’s pretty absent-minded, so it’s just like him.

 

Mithra: Isn’t that you?

 

 

* The phrase Akira uses here can also mean “you seem like you’re snapping at each other but getting along at the same time...” so I went with the translation that worked better for me.

Figaro: The scenery here in Southern Country is rather relaxing and calming.

 

Akira: The scenery in the Northern Country is stunning and magnificent, but do you prefer how it is here in the South after all?

 

Figaro: The North is covered in nothing but snow. It may be majestic, but it’s a pretty harsh and severe place.

I’d say this sort of laid-back environment suits me better.

 

Akira: A laid back environment, huh... It certainly makes me feel calm, like all my worries have been blown away.

 

Figaro: I’d say it’s pretty romantic. Chiletta liked to call this lake a date spot. Sir Sage, doesn’t it make your heart beat a little faster?

 

Akira: What do you mean...?

 

Figaro: Doesn’t it set a fire of passion ablaze in your heart? Right next to you now is a handsome yet somber wizard you could begin a tale of love with.

 

Akira: I- is that so... I think it’s best to be cautious around you when you’re in a laid-back environment...

 

Figaro: Eh? Sir Sage’s always on guard, as expected. Will you fall for it the next time I ask you if I take you to the North?

 

Akira: Um...

 

Figaro: Ahaha. You get all confused every time I talk to you like this.

But don’t you think I’m quite the catch?*

On Southern Country

 

Akira: The wizards of Southern Country always get along with each other. Was it always like this even in your hometown?

 

Rutile: That’s right. Of course, there were times when we got into disagreements, but everyone back in our hometown treated each other like family.

The South is a region where it can be difficult to survive, so it’s only natural for everyone to live in cooperation with each other.

If there’s something you don’t have at home, you can always borrow it from your neighbor. Families work together and gather to share meals, and the children of the village are raised all together.

That was how Mitile and I grew up, too.

 

Akira: Wasn’t it odd for you to encounter so many wizards who preferred to keep to themselves in the Magic Manor?

 

Rutile: A little bit... Honestly, I think things would be done faster if everyone could just work together.

Maybe it’s because many of them are used to living on their own, so they don’t see it the same way as I do.

Looking at it from their perspective though, I guess it’s the same feeling I get when I’m told that it’s time for everyone to harvest the crops on the day I wanted to spend reading. It is a little annoying.

 

Akira: Ahaha. I also did find it troublesome to do chores around the house back in my world.

But I agree with you - I think that it would be much faster if everyone could work together too.

 

Rutile: Fufu. It’s also much more fun like that.

I have a lot of good memories from such times, so it makes me a little sad that there are some people who’d rather be left alone.

 

 

 

 

 

On the Great Calamity

 

Akira: When you were back in Southern Country, how did you spend the nights when the Great Calamity approached?

 

Rutile: When the Great Calamity would come, Mitile and I would spend the night praying for the safety of all the chosen Sage’s Wizards. 

I think it was the same for every household. The chosen Southern Wizards were people who were known by everyone in their respective hometowns, after all.

 

Akira: I see... The wizards and humans in the South really do get along well.

 

Rutile: Yeah! We’d wish them luck when they’d head out, and hold a feast for them when they returned to thank them for their hard work.

This year, it’ll be our turn to do our best for everyone in our hometown. That’s why I’ll have to do my best and study magic until then.

I’d be happy if Sir Sage could also wish us luck and cheer us on before we go out to battle the Great Calamity.

 

Akira: Of course! I also want to do my best to help everyone out.

Wizards at the Spot

 

Rutile: Tycho Lake is a really beautfiul place, but it can be hard for humans to come visit with how remote it is.

That’s why there’s a job for wizards that is unique to Southern Country - a human gets on a wizard’s broom, and they go on a sightseeing tour.

They take a trip together for several days to visit villages that offer rare dishes and explore different scenic spots.

 

Akira: That sounds just like a tour guide! There was a similar job back in my world.

But why is that job unique to Southern Country? The wizards from other countries can fly on brooms too, after all.

 

Rutile: Um... It seems that in other countries, there’s quite a lack of trust in wizards.

If a bad wizard were to carry a human and take them somewhere far away, that would be quite troublesome, right?

 

Akira: Ah... I see...

 

Rutile: Of course, you can find bad wizards here in the South as well. It’s just like how there are both good and bad humans wherever you go.

In Southern Country, humans and wizards generally help each other out to survive, so a good relationship is built.

Wizards can offer assistance that can only be done through magic, after all.

 

Akira: That’s right... But I think every country should work the same way. It would be great if humans and wizards could trust in each other more and work together.

 

Rutile: I think so, too!

Akira: Figaro, you’ve known Rutile since the day he was born. What do you think of him?

 

Figaro: He’s got a lot of guts, but he’s also a gentle and good boy. I’m glad I got to watch over a kid like him grow up. That’s what I think.

You see, I was a little worried because he has a face similar to his mother’s. But his personality ended up resembling his father more.

 

Akira: Why were you worried...? Was Rutile’s mother really such a scary person?

 

Figaro: I wouldn’t say she was scary, but she wasn’t exactly a kind person. That’s how she was with me, at least.

Ah, but Rutile took after her in his cheerfulness and positivity.

 

Akira: Rutile definitely makes everything seem brighter and better. He’s saved me a few times just with that.

 

Figaro: I feel the same way. In the past, I asked him why he never gets worried or cowers away in fear. Something along those lines.

He answered, “there’s a wonderful person always watching over me.” He said that thinking about that is enough to always give him courage.

 

Akira: A wonderful person...?

 

Figaro: You’d go and think, “He’s talking about me”, right? I got so embarrassed I couldn’t say it, because it was just soooo cute.

But after dwelling on it more, I realized that maybe he wasn’t talking about me? It’s really got me thinking.

Akira:  Lennox, you and Rutile have known each other for a long time now. What do you think of him?

 

Lennox: Rutile, huh. That’s right...

He’s a good boy who’s good at taking care of others. Despite that, I’m relived that he’s still a child who knows how to let loose and be playful.

 

Akira: Relieved?

 

Lennox: Yeah. It proves that he’s growing up into a healthy young man.

 

Akira: I see. It’s like you’re watching over your family. Then, do you have any concerns about him?

 

Lennox: How he drinks too much alcohol, I think.

I wouldn’t say he loves to drink, but when he starts, he’s unstoppable. I think he got that from his mother.

Lennox: When we drink together, we don’t really do it to the point that we get completely drunk. I wouldn’t say I’m a lightweight either...

Akira: Mitile, from your perspective, what kind of person is Rutile?

 

Mitile: Nii-sama isn’t the type of person who has different faces, so I think the Nii-sama I know is the same one that Sir Sage already sees.

He’s kind, pleasant, and lovable. He’s a brother I’m very proud to have.

...Ah. But when we were at home, he’d sometimes show a different side from the one at school.

It wasn’t that different from usual, but it made me feel a little sad.

 

Akira: I see... Teachers should always treat all their students fairly, after all.

 

Mitile: But it was only a little bit! That was a long time ago, so please do keep it a secret, Sir Sage.

 

Akira: Of course. What’s he like when it’s just the two of you alone?

At first, I didn’t think we’d even talk to each other, because he is a weak wizard, after all. People normally don’t come close to me.

If you’re aware of the fact that he’s Chiletta’s son, you might be able to say they are quite similar.

Akira: Is that so... Do their faces look similar? Do they make the same facial expressions?

They laugh the same way when you give them a compliment.

Like when he gets excited, he starts doing something enthusiastically, but soon enough he gets bored of it and stops.
